the design of an app for seamlessly sharing international currency

the what
The goal was to design an app to help global travelers easily manage their finances between multiple currencies. They can also use this account to seamlessly send money to friends and family in multiple countries around the word regardless of its currency.

the problem
Exchange rates are ever changing and confusing. Users are needing a simple and effective way to manage currency exchange, "balance their checkbook" and send money to loved ones using foreign currencies.
the solution

process
The tried and true steps for functional artists of all types. Beginning with exploration to execution, using design frameworks helps encourage creativity and ensures that the product journey fits with the goals of the user.
01
understand
After working with seniors and English-language learners, I’ve realized that what feels intuitive to one person may not be for another. A key first step is gathering information and stepping into users’ shoes through direct research like interviews and activities.
ideate
Brainstorming is one of my favorite parts. This is the perfect time take the users needs and business goals into account. By defining the scope and objectives of the project it lays a solid foundation for everything that soon comes next.
02
test
It can be nerve racking to evaluate design concepts one's worked so hard on. Analyzing how each aspect will influence behavior and impact the experience of the user. But, how do you know until you find out?
03
design
Here comes the creative step and it all starts to take it's final picture. I determine patterns, typography, icons, elements of the pages, all working to design for functionality in addition to aesthetic.

focusing on the users
Interviews and questionnaires… this is how I began to think like those that will be utilizing the project. It was a privilege to sit down with a frequent long-term traveler and an immigrant who supports a family in his country of origin amongst others. I learned so much more than answers to the questions I came prepared with.

empathizing
Listening to ones story is an important part of not only a design process but connecting with other humans. Recognizing who they are, what motivates them, what makes them feel understood in a process that takes on more than just the surface level of a project.
competitor study
One of the competitors looked at was Western Union. Studying their application helped me to evaluate what worked well for them and what could be improved to give the user and elevated experience. Improvements included:
Lack of ability to see exchange rates as an easy decimal while making transactions
No easy way to view exchange rates trends over time
Large amounts of information on several pages which can be overwhelming for users

How might we provide a simple way to manage currency exchange in a transparent manner for travelers, migrant workers, and small multinational businesses so that they may transfer money in convenient and stress free way?

the moral of the story
The process of designing this application has been a great learning tool in both implementation and the design. The wholesome conversations during user interviews and testing strengthened my view on the importance of accessibility. Lots of goals were accomplished here but improvement can always be made to further insure that users of all backgrounds, technology skills, and differing preferred languages can equitably utilize this product. Some additional features to consider for future iterations include integration with other banks for a full-picture view of ones finances, requesting payments, and additional ways to compare exchange rates over time.
