Water Works

a website for a young author whose goal is to raise funds for water-impoverished countries

live website available at: waterworkssea.com
(this site has since been significantly updated by another designer, foundations of my work still present)

the website

the logo

logo

The author was not interested in a traditional logo but instead a design that matched the feel of the water color illustrations. It was exciting to dive back into the world of photoshop working with textures and patterns.

website

Designing and developing this website included an additional aspect of a e-commerce. Making sure the donate and purchase functions worked in every scenario and in a manner that enticed the customer to take that next step.

How might we create a cohesive identity for a children's book and website, matching the authors illustrations, that feels handwritten and whimsical

branding

This content of this brand came with a various vibrant colors from the patterned Chitenge bags to the books bold illustrations. I was important that the website design step back and let the other details shine. Simple clean fonts with a neutral color palette were chosen for the typed content.

empathizing

A big part of functional design is empathy. Putting yourself in the audience’s shoes. When creating something meant to inspire donations, it’s important to understand what motivates people and connect to that emotional and human side of decision making. Designing for a youth passion project that promotes positivity reminded me how powerful thoughtful design can be when it speaks directly to people’s values and desire to make a difference.

readers spread

Print design in comparison to digital was a whole new world for me. Making sure the design would translate from the screen through the printer and onto a paperback book taught me a lot of new technical skills. It was so cool using layout design to bring the vision of three different artistries (writing, drawing, watercolor illustration) to life.

oh wait there's more

print design as well!

merging the author's writing & illustrations and an additional illustrator's watercolor images into one 32 page children's book

the moral of the story

Youth is filled with creativity and visions. Letting the imagination and ambition run wild can turn into crazy cool things such as what this eager author did. Letting go of artistic rules and going with the flow can sure lead to some fun creations.
